While combing through the isles of wedding invites, flowers and djs I found this tiny booth in the back corner... that was a tree house wedding venue and bed & breakfast called Treehouse Point!

Summer love with July Flame & Laura Veirs

Portland's own Laura Veirs has done it again with her seventh album July Flame. Her new album as described on her website "explores the emotion of mid-summer. Drenched in wood smoke, sunlight, pollinators, pastoral dales, fireworks and warm nights, her lyrics explore the dichotomy between one’s desire for permanence and security and the realization that such things rarely exist. Nowhere on the album is this inherent tension more crystallized than on the title track." It is truly beautiful and I would say some of her best work. I am so excited to see her play at The Tractor Tavern on March 13th!

I can't wait to visit Blackbird’s newest store-- The Field House! Which is now open in the heart of Ballard, also known as my hood!

The Field House is reminiscent of general stores that were once at the heart of rural towns across America. Its shelves are stocked with a wide variety of merchandise, including classic work wear, vintage goods, basic groceries and candies, flowers, and perfumes and candles. It captures the history, geography, and folklore of times past, when goods were less disposable and had more meaning, a time when people canned their own food and took a moment to converse with strangers. It is perhaps Blackbird's most personal store, as it is inspired by owner Nicole Miller’s eccentric Pacific Northwest family and her desire to get back to basics.

“In a culture dominated by computers, The Field House is a refreshing invitation to slow down and connect with traditions that are lost and forgotten,” says Miller.

In addition to merchandise, The Field House plans to have free weekly classes on lost skills such as "How to Debone a Chicken" or "Lawnmower Repair." The store will sell Christmas trees for the holidays and will serve a "cup-a-joe" from an insulated Stanley thermos.

The Field House is an experimental pop-up shop. After three months, Blackbird will decide whether to make it a permanent part of the neighborhood (be sure to check it out!). It is located behind Blackbird at 5465 Leary Avenue NW in Ballard.

The brands and items currently offered at The Field House include: RRL, Filson, Pendleton, Woolrich Woolen Mills, Woolrich John Rich & Bros, Alden, Billykirk, The Hill-side, Red Wing, April 77, Fjällräven and more!

Inspired by these Scrabble pillows by Pillowhappy, I asked for a sewing machine for my birthday—how hard can it be to sew a few pillows, right? Went to Joann Fabric & Craft today purchased a starter sewing kit, cream fabric and some black felt. Got my machine all hooked up, started cutting fabric and duh... lost. Thank goodness for gooogle, I was able to find these great how-to videos by cyberseams.com. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Paul and I have been engaged for a little under a month and plans for our big day are underway. Here is a short list of the plans so far...

"In 1939 war against Germany was inevitable, the British Government's Ministry of Information commissioned a series of propaganda posters to be distributed throughout the country at the onset of hostilities. It was feared that in the early months of the war Britain would be subjected to gas attacks, heavy bombing raids and even invasion. The posters were intended to offer the public reassurance in the dark days which lay ahead.

The intent of the poster was to convey a message from the King to his people, to assure them that 'all necessary measures to defend the nation were being taken', and to stress an 'attitude of mind' rather than a specific aim. On the eve of a war which Britain was ill-equipped to fight, it was not possible to know what the nation's future aims and objectives would be."
